Afar and Erta'ale

With more than 30 active and dormant volcanoes, the Danakil Depression is a geological marvel. This remote area in Northern Ethiopia features extraordinary geological formations.  In contrast to the cool, temperate Ethiopian highlands, the Danakil is one of the lowest, driest, and the hottest place on earth.

Day 01  Addis Ababa - Mekele - Berhaile.

Fly to Mekele on Ethiopian Airlines.  Meet vehicles and drive to Berhaile.  Make camp, and see camel caravans passing through Berhaile against a backdrop of dramatic sunsets.Overnight Camping  

Day 02  Berhaile - Ahmedela.

Drive to Ahmedela passing through settlements of the nomadic Afar people. Overnight Camping.

Day 03  Ahmedela - Erta Alle.

Drive from Ahmedela to Dodom. Trek 15 kilometers to the Erta Alle volcano lake, 613 meters above sea level.  Arrive at Erta Alle around midnight and walk to see the spectacular volcanic eruption.  Set up camp and rest near, but upwind, from the eruption. Overnight Camping.

Day 04  Erta Alle - Berhaile.

Drive to Lake Asale and watch the salt workers as they cut bricks of salt from the lake bed. The bricks are then sold on the market and loaded on camel caravans for transport to the highlands.  Proceed to Dalol and view the dramatic and colorful geological formations caused by the hot springs rich in sulfur, potash, and salt.  Drive to Berhaile and make camp.Overnight Camping.

Day 05  Berhaile - Mekele.

Drive to Mekele.  En route visit an Afar village perched on the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. Overnight Hotel.

Day 06  Mekele - Addis Ababa.

Fly to Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines.  Visit the National Museum, home of the 3.18 million year old skeleton "Lucy." Optional souvenir shopping in the afternoon. Farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant featuring dancers and musicians representing some of the country's many ethnic groups.

Day 01 Telavive - Addis Ababa - Awash National Park.

Arrive Bole International airport and drive to Awash National Park. Sightseeing in Awash National Park. Overnight Hotel.

Day 02  Awash National Park - Semera - Logi.

Scenic drive to Semera.  Process paperwork for journey into Afar.  Continue to Logi for accommodations. Overnight Hotel.

Day 03  Logi - Afdera.

Drive to Afdera. Overnight Hotel. 

Day 04  Afdera - Dodom - Erta Alle.

Return trek to Dodom. Drive to Ahmedela and set up camp.Overnight Camping

Day 07 Mekele. Kombolcha

Drive to Kombolchaa gentle but scenic route to this old town situated below craggy. Overnight hotel

Day 08 Kombolcha - Addis Ababa.Telavive

Drive to Addis Ababa depends on the day you will visit the market on Debre sina. The remaining time to your departure will be shopping in traditional market. Farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant featuring dancers and musicians representing some of the country's many ethnic groups andtransfer to air port.
